The island of Krk is the biggest island in the
Adriatic Sea. The coastline is indented with multitude of coves and
beautiful beaches. The greater part of the island is covered with
Mediterranean forest and the rest with special type of forest called
makija and with etheric plants that spring from the rocky ground.
The island has a soft Mediterranean climate, with mild and windy
winters and very hot and often droughty summers.
The
real jewel is a small wooded island called Košljun with a small
Franciscan monastery and a museum. It covers only 0.06 square
kilometres and it is situated in the middle of Puntijar cove. You
can reach the island only by a boat that you can rent in the town
Punat at a popular price. Other excursions are also organized in
Punat. To all lovers of archaeology, amphorae, old coins and rare
books, we recommend a visit to Košljun.
Besides from its very rich historical heritage, island Krk can offer
plenty more. You can enjoy yourself on one of many equipped beaches,
with some of them specialized for nudists. Gourmands can visit many
restaurants serving authentic cuisine of the area and can taste
original Croatian wines. The nightlife on the island is extremely
rich and diverse - from dancing and dinning in the open to having
fun in one of the island's disco clubs. A stroll along the beach
will satisfy the tourists wanting tranquillity and relaxation.
For
tourists wanting adventure, we recommend a visit to a well-known
cave Biserujka in a small place Šilo near Kornić. The cave is 110
meters long and the classical concerts performed there are
unforgettable and worth seeing.
The past of the island is full of exciting events, and many middle
age monuments have been preserved. One of those monuments is the
famous Baščanska ploča dating from the year 1100, carved in stone in
an old language called glagoljica, also Vrbnik statute, a book of
laws from the year 1388. and Vrbnik missal, hand written on a
parchment and decorated with miniatures.
Numerous archaeological monuments have also been preserved such as
the St. Dunat' s church near Kornić and the St. Krševan' s church
near Glavotok
